LOOK FOR BETTER BUY SOOKE DECALS & SHOP LOCAL FIRST!

Better Buy Sooke

Most people understand the basic philosophy that if you spend your money in the community you live in, then that money will help your local merchants thrive and survive.
These same merchants will reinvest back into the community by offering more products and services, hire more local staff, buy more local inventory, possibly expand their businesses, and pay more in commercial taxes, which helps to build community infrastructure and amenities for its residents. This circle of economic development activity is called ‘shopping local’.
It doesn't matter if you live in Oak Bay, View Royal or Sooke, there are local businesses that depend on your regular support for their survival. So why don’t more residents choose to shop local?
In Sooke’s case it is because the majority of local residents are commuters who drive into the WestShore or Greater Victoria Area for work each day. It’s appears easier to stop and shop for groceries, gas and other daily items there before returning home to Sooke at the end of their day….yet these same things can just as easily be purchased in the community they live in.
In an effort to support its business members to share the shop local philosophy to residents, the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce has recently launched its ‘Better Buy Sooke’ campaign.
Chamber member businesses will soon be receiving the ‘Better Buy Sooke’ decal shown to proudly display in their shop windows and/or on their work trucks. The Chamber has also been actively placing educational information through local media, direct mail-outs and via social media platforms to help both residents and businesses in Sooke understand why it is so important to shop local.
It is a simple matter of consciously changing spending patterns to sustain the economic health of the community you live in. Regardless of where you live, this same philosophy is relevant.
The ‘Better Buy Sooke’ campaign has created quite a buzz and there is growing support from both residents and businesses in Sooke to increase the amount of money they spend with local merchants.
