The Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce is hiring a summer student starting early June. This position is for 35 hours per week for an 8-week project. The pay is $14.60 an hour.

Job Description: We are looking for someone to research and update and retarget an existing booklet (The 2015 Relocation Package needs to become Sooke: Open for Business booklet) on the Sooke Region Chamber, along with additional writing as required. Update the Relocation to Sooke booklet and retarget its use as a Sooke: Open for Business booklet, which will include the following:

  • Review Existing booklet
  • Research and update existing booklet
  • Review the Grant Application that contains the vision of the revised booklet
  • Add new information as required
  • Write, edit, and prepare the book to be print-ready
  • Work needs to be performed on a computer equipped with MS Office or Open Office
  • Take photos to be included in the booklet
  • Work under the supervision of the Executive Director

Skills: We seek someone with strong writing skills, an attention to detail, and the ability to edit. It will be a remote position (working from home) so you will require your own computer and software (Word or Open Office). You will also be asked to do some local photography.

Qualifications

  • You must be aged between 15 and 30 and be legally entitled to work in Canada. International students are not eligible.
  • Must be self motivated
  • Good communication skills and follows direction well

Preference will be given to Sooke residents, as the job will entail taking local photos and in person meetings as permitted by the provincial health officer with proper social distancing. Also, an understanding and familiarity of the Sooke environment will help fulfil the job requirements.

Consultant, Marketing – Market Research (June)

Job Description: We are looking for someone to prepare surveys for the business community in Sooke, exploring brick-and-mortar and online shopping businesses needs of local business owners. In response to COVID-19, the Chamber recently launched an online shopping mall, BetterBuySooke.ca. The survey will look for business needs and service gaps, as well as examine the online shopping needs of residents.

  • Research different surveys exploring shifting consumer patterns shopping online, as a result of COVID-19
  • Research how business owners can shift portions of business to online
  • Develop survey reaching out to consumers in Sooke
  • Develop survey reaching out to businesses in Sooke
  • Work under the supervision of the Executive Director

The position is for the marketing researcher to conduct an online business survey that will also require person-to-person contact (phone, email, in-person if social distancing is applied). The successful applicant will be required to present a report at the end of the term to the Board of Directors.

Communications Specialist (September)

The Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce is hiring a youth starting in September. This position is for 35 hours per week for an 8-week project. The pay is $14.60 an hour, 35 hours a week, eight weeks. The hours can be modified to part time (with an extended timeline) to allow for a student to work part-time while at school.

Job Description: The successful applicant will create Chamber of Commerce communications around promoting Sooke businesses and BetterBuySooke.ca, the local online shopping mall, including newsletters, articles, short videos (using smartphone technology), social media, etc. The successful applicant will be able to

  • Amalgamate existing research and documentation about Sooke businesses
  • Create content that engages readers and generates support for local businesses
  • Communicate through various mediums (social media, articles, video)
  • Work under the supervision of the Executive Director

Skills: We seek someone with strong communication skills, a creative side, and an ability to connect with people. An interest in business and entrepreneurship will be an asset.
