Visiting Sooke

Sooke is located 40 minutes west of Victoria and can be reached by following scenic Highway 14, also known as the Pacific Marine Circle Route.

Sooke is situated on the traditional and unceded territory of the T’Sou-ke Nation. The Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce is honored to live and work and play on this land and we acknowledge the complicated history of this region. We are committed to moving forward in a spirit of collaboration and gratitude.

Named for its early inhabitants, the T’Sou-ke First Nation, Sooke was a thriving settlement of the Coast Salish Indians. The T’Sou-ke First Nation have been on these lands since Time Immemorial. The name T’Sou-ke is said to derive from a stickleback fish found at the mouth of the Sooke River which flows into the Sooke Basin and Harbour. For hundreds of years the T’Sou-ke First Nation lived undisturbed off the land, until in 1790 Spanish explorer Manuel Quimper “discovered” this coastal hidden treasure.

Located on the most southwesterly tip of Canada, Sooke is a picturesque, ocean-side town boasting top-rated restaurants, world-renowned accommodations, and a variety of quaint shops. Affectionately known for being “Wild by Nature” the town is flanked by beautiful rainforests, windswept coastlines and beaches, and is bordered by numerous provincial parks and hiking trails.

Humpback Whales, Orcas, Grey Whales, Elephant Seals, Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Hummingbirds, and a variety of other wildlife are a daily occurrence in the waters, air and land of Sooke…a true outdoor enthusiast and nature lover’s paradise. Considered one of the world’s best fishing destinations, visitors can enjoy a year-round bounty of salmon, halibut, cod and trout with the unique opportunity for both salt-water and fresh-water sport-fishing activities.

Extraordinarily rich in its arts culture, Sooke hosts a number of very successful annual exhibits, workshops and shows celebrating the artisans of the region. The town is also home to the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra. Founded by world-renowned maestro Norman Nelson, this 60 member semi-professional orchestra performs a number of beautiful indoor and outdoor concerts each year.

With the mildest climate in Canada, Sooke truly has something for everyone.
